The Type 3A Driving Record Your Court Asks For

Many Texas courts want a certified driving record along with your defensive driving certificate. The Type 3A is the one Texas DPS lists as acceptable for a defensive driving course. Here is what it is, how to get it, and how to avoid ordering the wrong one.

The short answer

What Is a Type 3A Driving Record?

A Type 3A is a certified list of all crashes and violations on your Texas driving record, issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS). It is the certified version of the Type 3 record.

Courts use it to confirm your driving history, including that you haven't used a defensive driving course to dismiss another ticket in the last 12 months. Because it holds your full history, DPS only provides a Type 3A to the person the record belongs to.

Texas Driving Record Types, Compared

Texas DPS offers several record types, and they look alike on the order form. Tap each to see what it includes.

1

Type 1: Status record

The basics only: your name, date of birth, license status, and latest address. No history of crashes or violations.

Not for defensive driving
2

Type 2: 3-year history

Type 1 information plus crashes and moving violations from the last three years. Not certified.

2A

Type 2A: Certified 3-year history

A certified version of the Type 2. Certified, but it only covers three years, and DPS states it is not acceptable for a defensive driving course.

3

Type 3: List of all crashes & violations

Your complete list of crashes and violations, but not certified. Easy to confuse with the 3A, and the missing certification is exactly why courts reject it.

The certified version of the Type 3. Texas DPS lists this as the record type acceptable for a defensive driving course, and it is only issued to the person the record belongs to.

Type AR: Certified abstract of complete record

Type 3 information plus all suspensions on record. More detail than a defensive driving dismissal usually needs. Order it only if your court specifically asks for an AR.

When you need one

Who Actually Needs a Type 3A?

Drivers dismissing a ticket

If your court requires a driving record with your course certificate, it is almost always the certified Type 3A.

Drivers whose court instructions say "certified driving record"

That phrase usually means a Type 3A. When in doubt, call the clerk and ask which type.

Not usually needed for insurance

Insurers typically just want your course certificate.

Drivers checking their own history

A complete, official look at what's on your record.

Not everyone

If your court doesn't ask for a record, you don't need to buy one.

How to get it

Two Ways to Get Your Type 3A

Option 1 · Easiest

Add it when you enroll in our course

Order your Type 3A as a separate add-on during enrollment so your course certificate and driving record are handled together.

  • One checkout for both
  • Separate fee, shown clearly before you pay
  • Only add it if your court requires one
Option 2 · Direct

Order it yourself from Texas DPS

You can request a Type 3A directly from Texas DPS online or by mail. You'll need your license details, including the audit number on your card.

  • Online requests can usually be downloaded and printed
  • Mailed requests can take around three weeks
  • DPS sets the fee for each record type

Common slip-ups

Driving Record Mistakes to Avoid

01

Ordering a Type 3 instead of a 3A

One letter makes the difference. The Type 3 isn't certified, so courts won't accept it for defensive driving.

02

Ordering a Type 2A because it says "certified"

It is certified, but it only covers three years and isn't acceptable for a defensive driving course.

03

Requesting it by mail too late

Mailed records can take weeks. If your deadline is close, order online or order the record first.

04

Buying one your court didn't ask for

Not every court requires a record. Check your instructions before you pay for one.
